It’s the middle of the week, which means it’s “Whatever Wednesday”. Yay! I have been watching a new show on BBC called, Poldark. The show is based off twelve historical fiction novels, written by Winston Graham. He published the first novel, Ross Poldark: A Novel of Cornwall, in 1945 and the last novel, Bella Poldark, in 2002. I just found out recently that the BBC did some adaptations of the first two books. The first series in 1975 and the second series in 1977.
Here is the plot: In the late 18th century, Ross Poldark returns to his Cornish tin mines after spending three years in the army to avoid charges of smuggling, leaving behind his sweetheart Elizabeth. On his return, having fought in the American War of Independence, he finds his father dead, his estate in ruins and Elizabeth engaged to his cousin Francis. He rescues a young woman, Demelza, from a beating, and takes her on as a kitchen maid.
The newest series stars, The Hobbit’s, Aiden Turner. (Fans face and breathes deep, to keep from swooning.) This role fits him. He is gorgeous in all of those 18th-century clothes, surrounded by stunning scenery. Much of the action in Poldark takes place outdoors, against the backdrop of Cornwall’s breathtaking and rugged coastline.
The main character, Ross (played by Turner) is a man of contradictions. He has a strong sense of social justice but a contempt for authority. He is also a big, soft teddy bear inside. He can be so sweet, especially to his love, Demelza. His wife, Demelza, has a huge heart, as well, and wants the best for everyone she sees. They are a very cute couple. In fact, they are right up there on the cute couple list, with Monroe and Rosalie, from the show, Grimm.
If you haven’t watched Poldark, I suggest you give it a try. It’s wonderful! It will have you cheering for this couple that is trying their best to better the lives of their tenants and the people around them. I will post a link below, so you can watch the show.
By the way, sorry I’m posting so late. My kids took their finals in college today and I had to do A LOT of running. See you tomorrow for “Thriller Thursday”, where I will showcase an author of thriller fiction.
